⛩ Chihiro Ogino and Haku form the emotional core of Spirited Away, an initiation tale by Studio Ghibli where identity, memory and loyalty weave a hidden pact. At first, Chihiro is a fearful child, torn from her world when her parents, overwhelmed by greed, are transformed. Thrown into Yubaba’s bathhouse, she loses her name and becomes Sen, a sign of power exercised through language and forgetfulness. Yet this loss reveals her true strength: perseverance, kindness and the respect of promises. In this world ruled by spirits, Chihiro learns to act without yielding to fear, to work with sincerity and to keep alive the flame of a memory that refuses to fade. Her meeting with Haku, a quiet guide with a clear gaze, becomes the key to her journey.
Haku, spirit of a forgotten river, has also been trapped by a binding pact. His dual nature, between young mage and graceful dragon, embodies a restrained freedom that only loyalty to his true name can restore. When Chihiro sees him as the Dragon of the Waters, winding through the sky like a river awakening, it is less raw power than the memory of places that speaks. Water seeks its bed, a soul seeks its source. Their bond is born from a fragile shared memory, resurfacing like a song during a train ride skimming the ocean. In the poetic ethics of Hayao Miyazaki, these two figures tell us that remembering is already healing and that naming rightly is a form of liberation.
